About Us

St Cuthbert’s Pre-school Playgroup provides high quality care and education for young children between the ages of two and five years and we are open every day during school term time.

Our Playgroup is for children aged two years and is often the first time a child has been in a setting away from their parents.  The activities are designed to develop a child’s self-confidence and to begin to socialise independently with other children.  The Pre-school is for children aged three to five years and, through the broad and balanced curriculum we provide, continues to develop their knowledge and independence and prepares them for starting school.

The Pre-school Playgroup is set in St Cuthbert’s Church Hall in the village of Churchtown where we have access to two large play rooms with a wide variety of equipment and interesting activities.

We organise our sessions so that the children can choose from, and work at, a range of activities and, in doing so, build up their ability to select and work through a task to its completion. The children are also helped and encouraged to take part in adult-led small and large group activities which introduce them to new experiences and help them to gain new skills, as well as helping them to learn to work with others.

Outdoor activities contribute to children's health, their physical development and their knowledge of the world around them.  The children have the opportunity, and are encouraged to take part in, outdoor child-chosen activities as well as physical development play with bikes, scooters etc and adult-led activities e.g. obstacle course in our large Annexe.  We also go on regular outings within the local community and maintain a plot in the local Civic Society Garden.

We are a registered charity (1085385) which is governed by a Trustee Committee.  The Chair of Trustees is Dr Keith Hamnett (Ph.D, M.Ed., B.A., F.I.L).

The Pre-school Playgroup Manager is Mrs Margaret Wignall who has over 30 years experience and is directly involved in the care, development and education of the children on a daily basis.
